Vertical Jump Benchmarks by Level

What counts as "good" depends entirely on your competitive level and position. Here's a breakdown:

Recreational/High School: A vertical jump of 20-24 inches (51-61 cm) is considered good. This allows for effective rebounding and shot blocking.

College Level: Division I players typically have verticals of 26-32 inches (66-81 cm). Guards may be on the lower end, while athletic forwards and centers often exceed 30 inches.

Professional (NBA): The average is around 28-29 inches standing and 34-35 inches with approach. Elite athletes exceed 40 inches.

Can You Dunk?

Dunking requires reaching about 10 feet 6 inches (320 cm) to clear the rim. Your required vertical depends on your standing reach:

  • 7'6" standing reach: Need ~18 inches vertical
  • 8'0" standing reach: Need ~12 inches vertical
  • 8'6" standing reach: Need ~6 inches vertical
  • Most players need a vertical jump of 24-36 inches to dunk, depending on their height and arm length.

    Position Matters

Point guards can succeed with lower verticals if they have speed and skill. Power forwards and centers benefit more from jumping ability for rebounds and rim protection. The "good" number varies based on your role on the court.
